Substance and Alcohol Use as Predictors of Depression

As noted, a factor that can contribute to depression among women who sell sex is substance and alcohol use (e.g., Zhang et al., 2014). Research in the general population has demonstrated high comorbidity of substance use and depression (e.g., Regier et al., 1990). Some women use substances to self-medicate in response to depression and other forms of distress. However, drug use, itself, can also cause neurobiological changes that increase the risk of developing depression or exacerbate existing depressive symptoms (Volkow, 2004). This is relevant, given that substance use is prevalent among many research samples of women who sell sex (see Table 4.3).
